Would You Like This Badge? takes an alternative, personal and handmade approach to typical slogans and taglines used to promote and brand a city. 300 specially designed badges (50 x 6 different designs) will be available from selected Plymouth pubs during Sept-Dec 2011.The individual badges are developed in response to our experiences of living and working in Plymouth, thinking about how people view the city (from the inside and outside) and reflecting what is distinctive about this place.

The texts for these badges are formed from ‘found texts’, such as the re-worked version of Plymouth's welcome sign (which should read ‘Welcome to Plymouth - The Spirit of Discovery), snippets taken from conversations with other people or less widely celebrated facts about the city (Plymouth, UK twinned with Plymouth, MA).

The Would You Like This Badge? project has been developed especially to coincide with British Art Show 7 (BAS7), a major contemporary visual art exhibition (located across 5 art venues in the city) which aims to draw large numbers to the city, creating an influx of visitors.

As LOW PROFILE (aka Rachel Dobbs & Hannah Jones), we have been living and working in Plymouth since 2005, and in this time this underdog city has well and truly stolen our hearts. Our aim with these badges is to welcome visitors by helping them to navigate through the city. By locating the 6 badge designs in some of our favourite ‘tried and tested’ pubs/bars in Plymouth we hope that people find somewhere that they can enjoy relaxing and soaking up a bit of what the city has to offer. We also hope that people who already live in Plymouth will enjoy wearing these badges or sending them to their friends elsewhere in the world.

LOW PROFILE’s badges will go on sale from mid-September and LOW PROFILE will be blogging their experiences of wearing the badges throughout the project here on http://wouldyoulikethisbadge.we-are-low-profile.com, where we will also release details of how to join our special pub crawl (the only way to get a limited edition PLYMOUTH THE SPIRIT OF DISCO badge!).

LOW PROFILE are artists Rachel Dobbs and Hannah Jones, who have been working in collaboration since 2003 to make live art, performances and associated ephemera. They are currently based in Plymouth, UK.

Would You Like This Badge? is part of an artist-driven programme of events called Come to Ours that will run throughout September - December 2011 around Plymouth, UK.
